The loss of the
SS Athenia at 19:40 on 03/09/39, after being torpedoed by U-30, claimed the lives of 98 passengers and 19 crew members.
It marked the first sinking of the Battle of the Atlantic, one of the longest running battles of WWI, ultimately it claimed the lives of over 100,000 sailors, merchant seamen (36,000 civilians), aircrew and submariners over the next 6 years.
