Walatta Petros was an Ethiopian female saint who lived between 1592-1642. She was a follower of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and known for resisting conversion to Roman Catholicism, forming many religious communities and performing miracles.
Her biography written by an Ethiopian monk named Gelawdewos in 1672 is the earliest known of an African woman. The original text is in Geez (Ethiopic) language and script, and has recently been translated to English.
