Long story short - I was sitting at a red light, was watching the light instead of the car in front of me, and hit the gas too soon. My car traveled about a metre and tapped the car in front of me. Fortunately, she had a trailer hitch, and there was no visible damage from what we could see (lighting wasn't great and we were using our phones). I gave her my info and she said she would take a closer look when she got to work. I never heard from her after that.

That was three weeks ago. This morning, I received a call from AAMI saying the driver was making a claim because there was a dent in her bumper. The repair place hadn't given a hard quote yet, but the insurance person said it may be around $2000 to fix. No photos were included in her claim.

I was a little pissed, because it seems to me anything could have happened in the past three weeks - especially since the other driver works at a hospital and uses their multi-story car park - that could have caused this dent.

They said they would get back to me with the repair estimate and we could "negotiate," but it seems very suspect that they could prove I was the cause of said dent considering she didn't file the claim immediately, with no before / after photos to support it.

I've never had to deal with insurance in Australia, so am wondering if I have to pay this if they can't prove I caused it. Thoughts?
