It was the first slaying of a New York crime family boss since 1985, when Paul Castellano was assassinated on the orders of the dapper don, John Gotti, in an intra-family power struggle. However, multiple news reports now say that New York police think it’s possible the murder was not related to the mob. In some ways, the slaying never bore the hallmarks of a mob hit. Mobsters generally don’t murder other mobsters near family, as happened here, and there’s usually more than one assassin.
The suspect was taken into custody in New Jersey. Cosa Nostra News reported through sources that Comello may have heard voices that night “to the extent that he ‘asked’ President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence for permission to kill the Gambino acting boss.” Authorities have not confirmed that account. Instead, the NYPD stressed that the investigation has just started.
After John Gotti went to prison, Frank Cali purportedly took over the family in 2015. If you weren’t familiar with Frank Cali’s name, that was the point. Gotti brought too much federal attention on the mob family, which opted for a lower profile among its leaders after the Mafioso’s downfall. The Gambinos are one of the infamous Five Families of New York.
Francesco Paolo Augusto Calì (March 26, 1965 – March 13, 2019), known as "Frank" or "Franky Boy", was an American crime boss of the Gambino crime family. Law enforcement considered Cali to have been the Gambinos' "ambassador to Sicilian mobsters" and had linked him to the Inzerillo Mafia family from Palermo. According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Lipton, he was "seen as a man of influence and power by organized crime members in Italy",
Cali was shot and killed outside his home on Staten Island on March 13, 2019.
Officials identified the man as Anthony Comello and said he was in custody in New Jersey pending extradition to Staten Island.
"The investigation is far from over," NYPD Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea told reporters. "We do not believe this is a random act."
Shea said police were still working to determine the suspect's motive and whether he was working with or for other people.
"We are well aware of Mr. Cali's past. That will be a part of this investigation as we determine what was the motive for the incident on Wednesday evening," Shea said.

NYPD: Man arrested in death of Frank Cali, reputed Gambino crime family boss
NEW YORK – A 24-year-old man was arrested in the shooting death this week of reputed crime boss Francesco "Franky Boy" Cali and will face murder charges in New York, police said Saturday.
Comello had multiple residences, including one in Staten Island, Shea said. Comello had "crossed paths" with New York police multiple times in limited circumstances including a parking summons the day of the alleged murder.
Comello is being held in the Ocean County jail on a murder count, according to authorities.
Cali, 53, died at a hospital after being shot multiple times in the torso in front of his home in Staten Island. Police found Cali wounded after receiving a 911 call reporting an assault about 9:15 p.m. Wednesday.
Federal prosecutors in Brooklyn had referred to Cali in court filings in recent years as the underboss of the Gambino organization, related through marriage to the Inzerillo clan in the Sicilian Mafia.
Multiple press accounts since 2015 said Cali had ascended to the top spot in the gang, although he never faced a criminal charge saying so.
His murder marked the most notable killing of a Gambino boss since 1985, when Paul Castellano was shot dead in front of the Sparks Steak House in Manhattan. Cali lived less than a half-mile away from Castellano’s Staten Island mansion.
Cali was a native of Sicily, and his wife is the niece of Gambino head John Gambino.
The Gambino family was once among the most powerful criminal organizations in the United States, but federal prosecutions in the 1980s and 1990s sent its top leaders to prison and diminished its reach.
