Hey Europeans, American here
This past year has been one for the history books... and to cope with the stress I've been reading up on some history.
Usually, when Americans are taught about the American Revolution, we're kids, it's oversimplified, and general history tends to lean more toward events occurring in the Western Hemisphere until around WW1. This past year I've been reading a lot of our founding fathers' letters and was sort of astonished at the amount of information they used to form our government. They used the Roman Republic as the foundation, then meticulously studied each of your countries history. I mean I guess it shouldn't be that surprising considering this happened during the Enlightenment and France and Spain citizens were our colonial neighbors and helped us win the war.
During his presidency, George Washington had received a letter from a French citizen thanking him for not turning into a Julius Caesar, and describing the French citizen's support for a revolution too. Reading their letters, they were truly devastated by the Napoleon Wars.
It's weird realizing how much of a carbon copy America is to the Roman Republic though. I mean, even our capitol building is named "Capitol Hill" after the Roman Capitoline Hill.
After our civil war, we built the Lincoln memorial. I never knew this but the theme of the memorial is the ancient Roman fasces symbol... Each state is meant to represent a stick, our constitution is meant to represent the rope, symbolizing we're ~stronger together~. It was unveiled in the '20s and then a couple of years later Mussolini started using it.... awk.
The American Revolution obviously plays a huge role in our country's identity. Americans glorify it. I'm sure a lot of you guys noticed that on January 6 when a bunch of dumb fucks stormed the nation's capitol building screaming 1776. Some even dressed up as colonial people... *cringe*.
People are ready to revolt and "fight for our freedom" "fight for our rights" "FIGHT FOR OUR LIBERTY!!!" at just about anything these days. Like, calm down Karen we just want you to wear a mask.
