The share of South Korean carmakers in the global market increased by 1.2 percentage points year over year to 8.4% in Q1 2020, while the global auto sales are expected to slip by 22% to 70.3 million units this year compared to last year.
The number of corporate employees in South Korea dropped 1.2% year over year to 18.2 million, the first year-on-year decrease since the country’s Ministry of Employment and Labor started collecting relevant data in 2009.
South Korea’s exports fell by 24.3% year over year to $36.9 billion in April mainly affected by the disrupted supply chains and sluggish business activities amid the coronavirus pandemic outbreak.

Megabox, a South Korean multiplex operator, is set to reopen 11 theaters this week after shutting them down for about a month amid the coronavirus pandemic. The number of moviegoers declined to a record low of 1.83 million in March, compared with 14.67 million from the same period last year.
The South Korean government is set to spend 12.2 trillion won ($10.1 billion) as a disaster relief fund for all Koreans to boost the sluggish economy affected by the coronavirus pandemic. The amount of money Koreans will receive depends on the size of the family: $828 for families with four or more people; $662.6 for families with three people; $496.9 for families with two people and $331.3 for single-person households.
93.8% of 96 South Korean auto parts companies say they are suffering from a liquidity crisis, mainly affected by a decline in sales due to low demand amid the coronavirus pandemic.
