So I was talking to a mate down in Merimbula, and we both know people from Cobargo and Quaama and other towns that were absolutely fucked over by the fire nations attacks.
A few people are looking to take the insurance, sell the land and move into Bega, Narooma, Merimbula, etc or just go "Fuck it" and retire early and go to QLD and such.
Keeping in mind a lot of these downs had a fairly old-er population late 40's and on.
Even my own parents are looking to sell the house (which is thankfully still standing) and move now, so do you think there'll be any affected towns where the whole town just goes "Fuck it" and they don't get rebuilt?
Failing that towns that may substantially shrink after all the ash settles?

Hey guys, so a little bit about myself, I'm currently 22M completing my final year of engineering and mathematics studies at WA. However, I've been offered some opportunities to take up PhD studies in applied mathematics at the same uni under a scholarship (merit + experience) The stipend is actually a bit more than the regular RTP at 33.5-38k depending on some other factors.
I wanted to see what are the job prospects of a math PhD in industry after graduating? From what I understand, I should have the expectation to be getting the same job as a fresh degree grad. However, most of the quant jobs nowadays have been replaced with data analytics and statisticians. I'll be hoping to conduct research in network theory and maybe pickup machine learning along the way.
For PhDs that have left, was it difficult transitioning into industry after sacrificing 3 years of work experience any advice to give? I'm mostly pursuing my PhD out of interest and also with pretty good supervisors. Academia would be nice if it presents itself, but I'm not going to put any bets on it given the current education situation and number of vacancies that come up.

I know Australia has bigger things to worry about, like the bushfires, but my internet has been killing me. So far it has dropped out 16 times in the past 5 hours.
Thanks for listening to my rant.
