Hi there everyone
Although I've been a member of Reddit for a while, this is my first personal post. (And it's LONG so please be forewarned and thank you in advance for any help you can give me).
My issue: I cannot seem to find a job in Sydney, Australia.
It's been 8 months now and I'm starting to feel so worthless, not to mention bored and lonely.
Background for context:
- I'm not a high level academic, I have a Diploma in Business Admin, some IT certificates and generally I just do temp Records Management or Records Admin or even Reception roles.
- I am not an Aussie or a Kiwi, I'm actually a Pom, with a half Kiwi/half Pom partner (Haha, sorry!)
- Obviously because of the relationship, I'm on a Partner Visa, but a slightly different one to the Australian Partner visa. It's called a 461 Provisional NZ Family Visa and it's for 5 years. No work restrictions. Which is awesome to have.
- We have both originally come from the UK, in the Shropshire area.
- I have lived on and off in both Australia and NZ since 2008.
- In 2008 I spent a year here in Aussie travelling a lot of WA, some QLD and worked a few temp jobs in Sydney. LOVED it.
- In 2009 I came back on a Student Visa for 1 year and lived and worked in Perth part-time, at a Native Title Corp as a Records Officer.
- In 2012, I came back on a 2nd Student Visa and again lived in Perth for 1 year, working at the same place.

Just got a call from Optus trying to get me to switch over to NBN - so I currently have Optus cable with unlimited data and 100Mbps (speed test ~ 90 usually) for $54 per month ($60 with 10% mobile bundle discount).
The guy says he can get me a great deal: unlimited data, 40Mbps for only $70 per month. I tell him that is more expensive and slower than my cable plan. He does me a solid and gets it down to $63 per month. I reiterate my first point. He says he's going to see if he can get me a speed boost pack to 70Mbps offpeak or something (normally $30 per month extra) for free. I tell him it's still the same problem: more expensive, slower speed.
Then I look online for other providers, and it seems like the Optus plan is actually one of the better options. What is going on here?? I'm getting the impression I can't stick with cable, so essentially being forced into a slower and more expensive service?
