Today's topic:
The Revolutions of 1848
The year 1848 was a tumultuous one in Europe with a series of political upheavals breaking out across the continent. These events have been called among other things The Revolutions of 1848, Spring of Nations, People's Spring, etc. As these names imply the upheaval had different and deep roots ranging from discontent about the rights of national groups, political and economic rights of different social groups, and much more. While the individual "revolutions" were not coordinated, the revolutionary wave enveloped a large swath of Europe from German states to France to the Kingdom of Austria, the Danubian Principalities, and more. While some of the upheavals fizzled out and most failed to produce major political changes, the revolutions left a major social and cultural impact on the entire continent. In some cases the revolutions did, however bring about significant political changes as well, including the abolition of serfdom on the Austrian Empire and the introduction of representative democracy in the Netherlands as a preemptive move to forestall the spread of unrest there.
