The referendum was held 2.5 years ago.
There was only a slim majority in favour of leave.
Remain: 16,141,241 (48.1%) Leave: 17,410,742 (51.9%)
In the oldest age bracket (65+ years), 36% voted in favour of remain, and 64% in favour of leave.
In the 2.5 years since the referendum was held 1,245,098 people in that age bracket have died, so assuming the 36/64 split in this demographic we can reduce the number of votes accordingly to:
Remain: 15,693,005 (48.6%) Leave: 16,613,879 (51.4%)
In the youngest age bracket (18-24 years), 71% voted in favour of remain, and 29% in favour of leave.
In the 2.5 years since the referendum was held another 1,737,449 people have become eligible to vote, so assuming the 71/29 split in this demographic we can increase the number of votes accordingly to:
Remain: 16,926,594 (49.7%) Leave: 17,117,739 (50.3%)
That is just a difference of 191,144.
It would only take just over half of these people (less than 100,000 people) to have changed their mind for the “will of the people” to be to remain in Europe! That is only 0.21% of the registered voters. That is an incredibly small amount of people in the grand scheme of things.
When the referendum was held 2.5 years ago the people were not as well informed as they are now about the impact of leaving the UK. Their decisions to vote were based on speculations and campaign propaganda (some of which from the leave campaign has been proven to be inaccurate).
People are far more informed about the impact of leaving the EU, they realise that they were misled by the leave campaign. They know that the Brexit deal that was put on the table was terrible, and that is why there was an overwhelming majority of MPs that voted against it. Leaving with no deal is equally terrible.
If the people are given the opportunity to vote again I truly believe that another referendum will prove that the will of the people is to stay in the EU. The government can not continue to spout the now fallible assertion that they are following the will of the people.
There must be another referendum!
