Is my employer required to supply parking? (Details below)
I started work for this company back in November last year, it’s been a step up for me career wise but not financially but I saw it as a pathway to better things (money) eventually. I have researched online generally your work does not have to supply parking for you but I can only find information for personal cars, not work cars.
Does anybody know if my work is required to provide parking for me if I have a work car included in my package that states on my contract that it is required for me to have the car available at work to be used by myself and as a pool car during work hours?
My work pays for everything to do with the car including fuel, rego, servicing etc which makes the value of it a fair bit of my salary because it’s for personal use too, this made my salary look really attractive at the start because I would be able to sell my own car and pay off some of my home loan. I was not told about the parking at my office until the first day I started.
I pay $200 per month to park my car at my work but I just can’t afford it as my remaining salary after tax has me living week to week. I can claim the parking fees at tax time however that doesn’t help me the rest of the year. There are 15 and 30 minute street parking spots near my office however it’s a very busy and demanding job and does not allow for me to go down to move my car every 30 minutes and I have already gotten too many parking tickets because of this.
I have fought continually with my employer to provide parking as there is a secure parking lot attached to the office building I am in that they can pay for allocated parking spots but they have said no because they “are not required to pay for staff parking”.
It’s left me in a position where I feel the only way I can solve the problem is to get another job but I do want to explore all of my options and see if I have a legal standing as my moral standing just isn’t good enough a reason for them.
If it helps, I live and work in ACT.

I don’t think you’re entitled to staff parking (but I’d check with your union), but they’re also not able to force you to pay for the parking they prefer.
Find parking that works for you, tell them the options, and let them either pay for your time spent walking or the close parking.

If it's to be made available at work for a pool car then there are two solutions:
- They lay for you to park it at a convenient position for use by other employees.
- You park it somewhere free/cheaper and they deal with how far away it is parked.
Sounds like a shitty employer.

I can’t afford my parking lol, what makes you think I can afford a union?

It sounds like not having a union is costing you an awful lot. You can claim a deduction for them.
It seems to me like this is not a staff car as it is required to be available for company use. Fair Work Ombudsman may be able to help.
I hope you can find better work soon.

you have 2 options,
- make a spreadsheet listing all your expenses and how you are underwater requiring a parking spot or a salary raise or
- find another job
