Sad News before Christmas: Senate adjourned to Saturday that caused a government shutdown since Friday midnight and about one million civilian federal workers will be barred from doing their jobs
Friday, December 21, 2018
VietPress USA (Dec. 21, 2018): Today sad news is that a partial government shutdown will begin since midnight on Friday Dec. 21, 2018 as a stalemate with President Donald Trump and congressional leaders continues over his demand for $5 billion to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border.
The Senate adjourned without a deal on spending, just after 8 p.m. Friday evening ensuring a partial government shutdown at midnight Friday. Without a deal, funding for about 25 percent of the government expires at midnight. Senators expect to return at noon Saturday as talks continue. The House adjourned Friday evening and will return Saturday at noon which triggered a partial shutdown.
Politico reported that from his defense of Saudi Arabia’s crown prince over the murder of a dissident journalist to his abrupt decision to pull American troops out of Syria to his demand for a government shutdown, Trump has been angering friendly lawmakers, leading some who typically kept their disagreements to themselves to speak up.
President Donald Trump faces a dangerous erosion of support among rank-and-file Republicans thanks to a series of jarring recent moves that have alienated even some close GOP allies.
The trend could prove perilous for the president after Democrats assume control of the House in January. Should the House vote to impeach Trump, he will have to rely on an increasingly exasperated Senate GOP conference to prevent him from being thrown out of office.
Trump has always focused on pleasing his political base, governing with an eye more toward unifying Republicans rather than the country as a whole. For much of his presidency, the strategy worked: Both his core supporters and Republicans in general supported his withdrawal from the Paris climate accord, ditching the Iran nuclear deal, and confirming Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, to howls of protest from Democrats.
More recently, however, cracks are showing between Trump’s base and GOP officials, who are rattled by his Syria exit and the ensuing resignation of his Defense secretary, Jim Mattis.
The federal government shutdown only partially curbs operations. But the longer the shutdown continues, the more likely its impact will be felt.
U.S. troops will stay at their posts and mail will get delivered, but almost half of the 2 million civilian federal workers will be barred from doing their jobs if the shutdown extends into Monday.

Senate adjourns, partial shutdown ensured
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Senate adjourned just after 8 p.m. on Friday night (0100 GMT on Saturday), bringing an end to congressional business for the day and thereby ensuring a government shutdown.
The Senate is set to return from recess at noon on Saturday (1700 GMT on Saturday).
The failure by the U.S. Congress and President Donald Trump to agree to a government spending bill by midnight will shutdown several federal agencies.
