Today Bosnians will vote in a general election to choose the most important officials at the national and sub-national level. Bosnia has a rather complex political system, the framework of which was created as part of the Dayton Agreement that ended the Bosnian Civil War. Key to this system of government is extensive power sharing between government at the national level and the two main semi-autonomous entities: the Serb dominated Republika Srpska and the Bosniak/Croat dominated Federation of Bosnia Herzegovina. There is also the Brčko District, which is a special administrative unit, which has some local powers, but in other matters overlaps with the two main entities. Finally, in addition to the geographic division, some positions are reserved for each of the three constituent nationalities/ethnicities of Serbs, Bosniaks, and Croats.
Elections today cover both the national governments and the entities. Specifically, the former institutions are up for grabs:
- The (triple of course!) Presidency of Bosnia Herzegovina, consisting of a Serb, Bosniak, and Croat member.
- The Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina
- The Presidency of Republika Srpska
- The National Assembly of Republika Srpska
- The Parliament of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina
- Cantonal Assemblies of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina
This article does a decent job of summarizing the main political players.
So will Fahrudin Radončić succeed Bakir Izetbegović as the Bosniak member of Presidency or will the less known SDA candidate Šefik Džaferović edge out? Will Milorad Dodik and his trusted protégé Željka Cvijanović sweep the presidency of Bosnia and Republika Srpska respectively? Will HDZ 1990 continue to stagnate or can they hold up as a viable (and confusingly similar) counter-force to their former mothership of HDZ-BiH among the Croat public?
Find out later today as the wholesome brotherhood and unity fiesta that was the Bosnian electoral campaign finally comes to a thrilling culmination.
Official results will be posted here
