VietPress USA (April 2nd, 2018): Today President Trump twitted to order "...Congress must immediately pass Border Legislation, use Nuclear Option if necessary, to stop the massive inflow of Drugs and People. Border Patrol Agents (and ICE) are GREAT, but the weak Dem laws don’t allow them to do their job. Act now Congress, our country is being stolen!"
Trump then added: "Border Patrol Agents are not allowed to properly do their job at the Border because of ridiculous liberal (Democrat) laws like Catch & Release. Getting more dangerous. “Caravans” coming. Republicans must go to Nuclear Option to pass tough laws NOW. NO MORE DACA DEAL!"
"The nuclear option (or constitutional option) is a parliamentary procedure that allows the United States Senate to override a rule – specifically the 60-vote rule to close debate – by a simple majority of 51 votes, rather than the two-thirds supermajority normally required to amend the rules. The option is invoked when the majority leader raises a point of order that only a simple majority is needed to close debate on certain matters. The presiding officer denies the point of order based on Senate rules, but the ruling of the chair is then appealed and overturned by majority vote, establishing new precedent.
This procedure effectively allows the Senate to decide any issue by simple majority vote, regardless of existing procedural rules such as Rule XXII which requires the consent of 60 senators (out of 100) to end a filibuster for legislation, and 67 for amending a Senate rule. The term "nuclear option" is an analogy to nuclear weapons being the most extreme option in warfare.
The nuclear option was first implemented on November 21,2013, when Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid used it, and eliminated the 60-vote rule on executive branch nominations and federal judicial appointments other than those to the Supreme Court. In April 2017, Senate Republicans expanded the nuclear option's use by eliminating the exception for Supreme Court nominees, after the nomination of Neil Gorsuch failed to meet the requirement of 60 votes for ending the debate." President Donald Trump urged the U.S. Senate to change its rules Monday in order to pass funding for his proposed wall along the US-Mexico border.
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders echoed Trump’s call in a Monday morning interview on Fox and Friends saying “I hope Republicans do, and follow the president’s lead.”
“We have influx of drugs and gang members coming across from Mexico but through Mexico,” Sanders continued. “They need to step up and do more.”
“Congress has to step up and do more, making sure we do everything we can to protect the people of this country. That is what the president is committed to doing.”
