Trump borrows Clinton's words for State of the Union address
President Trump borrowed a term from a 2010 Hillary Clinton speech in his State of the Union address.
“This in fact is our new American moment, there has never been a better time to start living our American dream,” Trump said Tuesday evening.
“New American moment” was a phrase used in a 2010 speech delivered by then Secretary of State Clinton, as the Washington Post noted in a Sept. 8, 2010, story:
Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton declared Wednesday that “a new American moment” has arrived in international relations, “a moment when our global leadership is essential, even if we must often lead in new ways.”
Clinton delivered her remarks at the Council on Foreign Relations, discussing President Obama’s foreign policy plan.
Trump has continued to reference his former presidential rival, as he did two weeks ago during a Pennsylvania speech, but early excerpts of the State of the Union address did not mention her by name.
At the 2016 Republican National Convention, Melania Trump was criticized for lifting quotes from a 2008 Michelle Obama speech.
