Bernie Sanders' supporters are angry, but they'll end up
casting their votes for Hillary Clinton and not Donald Trump, according to Vice
President Joe Biden, and he doesn't think that emails showing the Democratic
National Committee skewed their support toward Clinton over Bernie Sanders made
a difference in the primary election's outcome.
"I know you're going to go for Hillary," Biden told
ABC's George Stephanopoulos, when the "Good Morning America" host
asked what he'd tell Sanders' supporters, in a pre-recorded interview airing
Wednesday.
"[I'd say] I just know because you're as moral as you
say you are. I know you can't vote for Trump."
The Sanders supporters are angry about the emails, pointed
out Stephanopoulos, and Biden said he didn't know for sure if Russia was behind
the leak that lead to the resignation of DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz the
day before the Democratic National Convention opened this week.
However, he said, the leak is the "modus operandi of
Russia" and "totally consistent with Putin."
And while he wouldn't say he thinks Russian President
Vladimir Putin favors Trump, he does think that he "doesn't want Hillary
to win."
Also, Putin doesn't want a united NATO or a united European
Union, said Biden.
"I can see where a lot of our adversaries would think
it's better to have someone who doesn't have any idea what they're doing
[compared to] somebody as tough as Hillary," the vice president told
Stephanopoulos.
Meanwhile, Trump has proven popular with working class
voters, and Biden believes that's because "he has been very successful in
playing on their fears."
"There's not been enough focus on playing on their
hopes, appealing to their better angels," said Biden. "I don't know
anybody rich or poor or well off or not who isn't concerned about ISIS."
And when it comes to ISIS, Trump and his running mate,
Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, have complained that talk of ISIS has not come up on
the DNC floor, Biden said "these guys don't know what they're talking
about."
"We have the single most significant homeland security
of any country in the world, and what are they doing, Pence and Trump, what
they're doing is they're breaking up our alliances," said Biden.
Biden insisted in a separate live interview on MSNBC's
"Morning Joe" program that he "doesn't have anything
personal" against Trump, but said the GOP nominee "knows nothing
about foreign policy, nor should he based upon his background."
However, the vice president said what bothers him about Trump
is that he doesn't see any attempt from him to "go out and get people who
really know on the Republican side."
He also doesn't believe that Trump is a friend of Putin, as
some are claiming, but he does think that Trump is playing into the Russian
dictator's hands with his comments on NATO.
"Here you've got someone coming along and says unless
Latvia pays the bills, I'm not sure we're going to honor article five of the
treaty, that is the most significant treaty for mankind, that is central to our
security," said Biden.
"I don't think he knows what article five is and nor
should anybody here know what article five is. If you're going to be president
of the United States of America, you better know."
Further, he said that Trump's comments about defeating ISIS
through bombing "make absolutely no sense. I shouldn't guess his motive,
but it worries me."
Biden said that everywhere he goes around the world,
"whether I'm reaching across the table to try to solve a problem with XI,
the president of China, or I'm down in New Zealand with the prime minister,
they go, 'Tell me, Trump, that can't happen, can it?'"
The vice president also commented on Trump's popularity with
the working class, and he said he believes part of the reason for that is that
the Democratic Party has not been speaking enough with those people.
He also laughed off a question from NBC's Willie Geist over
whether he'd be doing better than Trump had he decided to mount a campaign for
the 2016 election.
"Look, I learned one thing," Biden replied.
"The way to become really popular is announce you're not running for
president."
