San Jose, CA - ThùyLinh, aka TL, is the first Vietnamese American Jazzvocalist of
the bay area. As a petite chanteusestanding at 4'11"with a
surprisingly low and rich pitch,TL glides warmly between lyrical sensuality and
pensive nostalgia. With a unique style and an exotic sound, she will mesmerize
you with her soothing vocals and vivacious stage charm.
Along with composer
Nguyễn Dự, TLhas created Jazz is You! Jazz làEm! in 2013 with the
mission to bringJazz into the heart of the ethnic communities and make it
accessible. JazzisYou! JazzlàEm! isa community of musicians and patrons with
a dream to educate and expose ethnic communities to this great American art
form.
Our programs aim to introduce to the community most current and
up-and-coming talents throughout the greater bay area. Venues include ethnic
hubs where the community likes to gather regularly: Coffee Lovers,Phoenix Art
Center, Viet TET New Year Festivals and Blue Note Lounge. Jazz isYou!
Jazzlà Em! offersjazz jams that drew standing room crowds of at
least 150 guests. This tremendous turn-out and on weeknights
proves that the community is thirsty for new musical sounds beyondtraditional
Vietnamese music, both pop and folk.
Society Cabaret bringsquality
performances to San Francisco, La Jolla andnow SAN JOSE in an intimate
and inviting venue highlighting stars and regional entertainers who tell their
stories through song and word. Society Cabaret partners with Paolo's Restaurant
to bring fine dining and excellent entertainment to the Silicon Valley.
Openingweekend is Fri., May 22 and Sat., May 23 -2015.
G. Scott Lacy, Director of Entertainment, comments:
“We are so happy to be bringing Society Cabaret to downtown San Jose.
We are even more thrilled to haveThùyLinhgraceour grand opening. Who better
thana Vietnamese American musician to celebrate the third largestVietnamese
American community outside of their homeland."
In THEN & NOW,ThùyLinh shares her love affair with Jazz. Songs
include standards that first captivated her toJazzand original compositions
inspired by her community work and Vietnamese poetry. THEN & NOW is also
the title of TL's first professional CD, produced in 2012 during a difficult time
of her life, demanding a full review of past and present.
TL reveals herpassion for Jazz:
"I was drawn to Jazz by its free spirit and romantic stories.
There is immense musical freedom for musicians to create a new sound or song
using an old standard. It is our job to re-tell an old story but in a new,
captivating way. It is not about copying what's been done before, but reviving
old songs to make them fresh and relevant again."
TLhas been singing since age twenty,self-taught and drawn to jazz in
college by the classic voices of Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Billie
Holiday,Louis Armstrongand Nat King Cole. She credits her love ofsinging to the
melodious songs she heard growingup in her Vietnamese communityand her unique
styleto a most unusual personal history for a singer of American jazz.
TLwas born
in Nha Trang, Vietnam. Since the age of three,TLwas also on a personal journey.
As a child, she had contracted polio. Soon after, the young girl had to deal
with the effects of post-polio syndrome. The effects however did not prevent
her from going forward and pursuing her dream of singing. After the fall of
Saigon, hundreds of thousands fled to neighboring countries and the United States.
Nine year old TLand her familyescaped in a 30-person fishing boatheading for
the US.
CurrentlyTLis creating original compositions in collaboration with the
poet Bashou. The first in the series is Lotus Child and the second is Lady
Moon.
About Jazz is You! Jazz là Em!
Created in November2013with the mission to:
1. bringJazz into the ethnic communities;
2. expose and make it more accessible to diverse new audiences;
3. provide a stage for musicians at all levels to hone their craft;
4. create more opportunities and jobs for local musicians to play and
network; and
5. help promote locally-owned businesses who
are committed to also growing the local music scene.
It hasbeen a grand success to date with our target Vietnamese, Latino
and African Americanaudiences. We're always looking for local venues to
bringlive Jazz into the community. In2015 JazzisYou! JazzlàEm! plans to
enter communities beyondSan Jose where prominent ethnic communities reside:
Oakland(January);and Little Saigon inOrangeCounty,southernCalifornia(March,
June, September and December).
